Boğaziçi University CMPE 58X: Foundations of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
1- How effective was the instructor in:
a) teaching the course
*** If I summarize my deepest thoughts and comments about Dr. Yasin Şenbabaoğlu in terms of his teaching, I can say that he is a great instructor. He was always prepared in entire semester and he always convinced me with my questions. Moreover, his slides are neat and well documented which helps us while doing homeworks and studing exams without needing a reference text books. Also, he used lecture time very effectively. Personally, I even once wasn’t bored because he always mentions about interesting things, not only theoretical subjects but also their usage in the literature by showing example published articles and videos. Also, he always tries to give us time to think about pop questions during the lecture therefore I didn’t have difficulties to understand and missed the answers.
*** Our course in this semester was about Bioinformatics and Systems Biology. It also covered application of statistics in Bioinformatics. Dr. Şenbabaoğlu successfully introduced us key topics in the scope of the course. Although it was a condensed summer course and the schedule was quite loaded, thanks to his holistic teaching techniques we got a firm grasp of the subject. I think Dr. Şenbabaoğlu uses in class exercises, homework and research projects very effectively. This increases involvement of everyone and we really learn what we are doing. In addition to these, he follows developments in bioinformatics very closely. Thus we are exposed to most up to date information sources and material.
b) designing the course
*** When I saw the syllabus before course (Foundations of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology) start, I realized that the course was well organized and it can direct me at my dissertation. Especially, the statistics part of course was great and it was really beneficial for me especially for understanding other articles in the literature. On the other hand, it would be nice if there was more programming assignments because I think, implementing algorithms provide more insight.
*** I believe this course was designed for computer engineers who would like to develop data analysis oriented research in bioinformatics field, or for people with biology background who want get more familiarized with data analysis techniques in bioinformatics. From this point of view the course was designed very successfully. At the end of the course all of us were much more equipped about most useful and up to date bioinformatics resources, use of BLAST, genome databases like Genome databases NCBI, Ensembl, and UCSC, systems Biology concepts and application of statistics in bioinformatics.
2- Considering all the instructors you have had in university, where do you think this instructor ranks? What are the main reasons that you give this rank?
*** Better than 90 %. I would like to take any other courses of him too.
The main reasons I give this rank are:
- I can easliy contact with him both via email and after the class.
- His knowledge always impressed me, I could get answers for my questions all the time.
- His recommendations and guidance were useful both for my dissertation and term project.
- He introduced us hot research topics and fields.
- The subjects that he covered in the lectures can also be useful for other courses.
- His teaching materials were great and he shared them with us.
*** Better than 95%.
The main reasons I give this rank are:
- he has strong knowledge in his field of expertise
- he follows most up to date resources
- his teaching methods make the subject easy to grasp for students
- he is always helpful when we ask a question, and shares his knowledge generously.
- He also gives historic aspect of course material that we deal with (e.g. how the developments in bioinformatics were accomplished, or personality of key figures in bioinformatics) and can always pinpoint a humanitarian linkage and thus make the material more fun.
